Music students in Tequesta Trace have to perform in one of three formal bands:
Concert Band
Students will be assisted in selecting their instruments from the following: Flute, Oboe, Bassoon, Bass Clarinet, Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, Trumpet, Cornet, French Horn, Trombone, Tuba, and Euphonium. Experienced Percussion students are placed after discussion with the Band Director.
This class is offered to teach students how to read and write music notation, play an instrument with the correct technique and embouchure, and learn music theory fundamentals.
Advanced Band
Students will have experience in their instrument of choice. There are some opportunities for switching to a similar instrument, for example between the types of saxophone, small brass or large brass.
This class is offered to teach students who already know how to read and write music notation, play an instrument with the correct technique and embouchure, and know the music theory fundamentals.
Symphonic Band
Students will have experience in their instrument of choice. There are a few opportunities for switching to a similar instrument, for example between the types of saxophone, small brass or large brass.
This class is offered to improve students who are competent in reading and writing music notation, are capable at playing an instrument with the correct technique and embouchure, and are familiar with music theory.
Percussion students also have to attend the following after school group
Drumline
Drumline is a percussion-only band for students of any grade. Music students who play percussion in either Concert, Advanced or Symphonic bands are required to also attend Drumline.
Drumline members must attend after school sessions, twice per week.
In addition there are two optional bands
Jazz Band
Jazz Catz is a school elective for advanced musicians of any grade who wish to play ensemble jazz and pop pieces. Students should be able to competently read music, be competent on their instrument, and be able to feel the rhythm of the music genre.
Jazz Catz members must attend Symphonic Band as well. Exceptions may be reviewed with the Band Director.
Pep Band
Pep Band is also known as Rally Band. It is a relaxed format of music that is commonly found in sporting arenas. Music pieces are short, loud and have to be memorized by the students.
Pep Band is open to all students, and is usually a first step for beginner students towards entrance into the Jazz Band .
Practice sessions are informal, often with tunes passed between students and learned by ear.
